A Start-up Guide to Working with Big Businesses

If you are looking to work more closely with big businesses to deploy your innovative solutions, then this is the workshop for you - designed for innovative SMEs, Startups and scale ups looking to develop relationships and commercial partnerships with large corporate clients, it will give you a unique perspective on how corporate innovation works and how you can capitalise on those relationships.

Based on in-depth research over the last 18 months, Plus X Innovation will present key insights into how large and small organisations work together innovatively to solve complex problems. 

Having interviewed dozens of some of the UK's biggest and most recognisable companies (including SKY, Marks & Spencer, Kimberly Clarke, Costa Coffee), to understand how they operate, they have mapped out their processes and key stakeholders, with a particular focus on how they work with start-ups to drive their innovation targets.

This session will allow attendees to understand the needs and challenges of both types of organisation and give you the knowledge and tools you need to successfully win and deliver projects with big businesses.

During the session you will:

  • Gain a deep understanding of the corporate innovation process, learning about how large companies plan and deliver projects working with SMEs
  • Learn about what corporate companies are looking for when selecting SME innovation partners and how you can make your business more attractive
  • Establish some key frameworks and best practice for engaging with big businesses in complex partnerships.

Key-note Speakers:

Toby Kress, Programme Director (Plus X Innovation)

Toby works with innovators and industry to develop and scale innovative solutions to big challenges. He supports design and development of innovation programmes and accelerators for corporations, startups and scaleups. Before Plus X, Toby led the oldest startup incubator in Shoreditch helping startups scale from launch to Series A. He was formally the UK Director of REMIX, the global summit for Culture, Technology and Entrepreneurship organised in partnership with Google, Bloomberg and The British Council. In 2010, he co-founded tech startup Groop Gifts and in 2012 gained an Executive MBA from London Business School 

Ben Harrison, Innovation Programme Manager (Plus X)

Ben is an an experienced start-up founder, advisor and Imperial College MBA graduate. His career background has focused on sales, route to market strategy and project management, gaining experience in the Defence, Private Equity and Financial Technology sectors. As Innovation Programme Manager at Plus X, he has led several complex corporate innovation programmes, spanning multiple sectors, from food waste to water scarcity. Over the last 18 months, Ben has been conducting in-depth research into the realm of corporate innovation, working to consolidate key insights into simple, actionable frameworks to enable large scale collaborative problem solving.
